Abstract
Exchange rate shocks are particularly important under the current conditions of the Iranian economy, where identifying and mitigating inflationary factors has become a major concern. In fact, exchange rate pass-through is one of the key factors affecting firms’ sales performance, profitability, and stock returns in Iran. Given the importance of this issue, this study investigates the effects of exchange rate pass-through on the sales performance, profitability, and stock returns of firms listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange, with particular emphasis on the asymmetric effects of positive and negative exchange rate shocks. The analysis is based on data from 262 firms over the period 2007–2021 and employs the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). In addition, an EGARCH model is used to identify positive and negative exchange rate shocks over the period 1978–2021.
The EGARCH results indicate that positive and negative shocks do not contribute equally to exchange rate volatility. The GMM results further show that the pass-through of negative and positive exchange rate shocks to stock returns is asymmetric and incomplete. In contrast, the pass-through of negative and positive exchange rate shocks to sales performance, return on assets, and profitability is asymmetric and more than complete. Specifically, a 1% increase in negative and positive exchange rate shocks is associated with decreases in stock returns of 0.3441% and 0.2121%, respectively; increases in firms’ sales performance of 67.4565% and 8.8757%, respectively; increases in return on assets of 180.1215% and 10.1386%, respectively; and a 25.1552% decrease and a 13.6004% increase in the operating profit ratio, respectively.
